How To Negotiate Salary
Step by step instructions to Negotiate Salary There are individuals on the planet who enlist attorneys to arrange more significant compensations for them, and afterward there are individuals like me who request that those legal advisors share their top tips on improving arrangement. At PowerToFly, we plunked down with Nicole Page, Partner at Reavis Page Jump LLP, for a Lunch and Learn where she shared how she's raised innumerable pay rates for her customers. Nicole has an enormous female demographic and was offering guidance for all sexual orientations, however during the Lunch and Learn, she concentrated the discussion on how and why ladies should chip away at their arrangement abilities. In case you're a PowerToFly VIP, you can re-watch the whole talk here.1. Make A Wish List Nicole Page: The first and primary concern that I advise anyone who's coming to me and saying they have a new position offer, or they're considering progressing to another position, is to make a list of things to get of everything that they look for from their next circumstance. This truly encourages you center around the things that are extremely imperative to you. It additionally just cements what you will request - it encourages you get clarity.2. Practice And Prep For The NegotiationNP: I would invest a considerable lot of energy getting ready for the exchange, you nearly need to read for an arrangement like you would read for a test. Ask the same number of individuals in your industry what their encounters are, and simply continue rehearsing what you're going to state. You will be apprehensive, and presumably on edge - rehearsing so anyone can hear can enable you to be as readied as you can be.3. Examination Salary Ranges and Ask For MoreNP: Without realizing the pay scope of the position, you're haggling in a vacuum. Information is power, as is commonly said, and I urge individuals to coordinate with others in their industry and discover what they're being paid. I know it is difficult, yet the best way to genuinely approve a c ompensation go is to begin asking what your partners and friends are making. After you've done your examination and discovered what the market rate is, you are going to consider the number that you need, and you will request more than that. I'm not saying you're going to twofold that, however for the most part, when you're arranging, the thought is to make a type of bargain. You need to have the option to go down a bit, and let them come up - compromise with them. 4. Ask In Personâ"Not EmailNP: I think while you're currently arrangement, it is anything but an ill-conceived notion to do it in discussion. It's significantly simpler for somebody to state no in an email, yet face to face, you're ready to advocate for yourself and might have the option to do some persuading. You likewise need to recognize your influence in any exchange - that will enable you to choose what you're going to counter with, or in case you're going to counter at all.5. Be Clear, Confident And Direct About You r AskNP: It's essential all things considered, and not indecisive in a pay arrangement. On the off chance that you need something, you must be exceptionally immediate about it. You can't expect that somebody's going to recognize what you mean. They won't recognize what you mean, and indeed, they're disincentivized to comprehend what you mean on the grounds that the business is basically giving you a compensation offer they're trusting you will acknowledge. They would prefer not to pay you more in the event that they don't need to. I'm not saying this to cast scatterings on bossesâ"this is simply business and how business functions. On the off chance that someone can pay you less to carry out a responsibility, they will since it's progressively productive for them. In this way, you must be immediate, and you must be open to requesting a higher salary.6. Act naturally PromotingNP: You should continually remind your boss how significant and how incredible you are, not simply in the mi dst of exchange. Act naturally advancingâ"you're simply undermining yourself in case you're not, and numerous ladies feel that in doing so they appear to be boasting, and that is simply false. Each time you accomplish something great, make sense of an approach to tell your manager and your chief. Not in a disagreeable manner, however simply be innovative about it. Try not to accept that anyone's watching or recognizing or minds, aside from you. You need to pay special mind to yourself all the time.7. Try To Have Your Next Ask ReadyNP: You may go into a pay exchange and state, 'I need x a bigger number of dollars than you've offered.' And the business may state, 'Well, we can't do that.' You generally need to have your next ask in line. What I mean by that will be that in light of the business, you could answer, 'Well, in the event that you can't give me the compensation I need, at that point I need you to give me a superior title.' So, you need to have a bit by bit manage on your r undown and in your cerebrum as you go into the arrangement of what you're going to state on the off chance that they disapprove of an inquire. Allude back to stage one - make that list!8. Keep in mind, It's NOT A Confrontation - It's a Precedent For YourselfNP: Nobody prefers a showdown, and in the event that you go into an exchange thinking it is, you're simply going to build your own tension level. An exchange is extremely only a discussion you're taking part in while being defensive of yourself and your needs. Studies have demonstrated that 5% of ladies and 60% of men take part in compensation dealings. This implies from the earliest starting point of your vocation, you are starting a trend for yourself and what you merit. Starting a trend may not generally mean pay, this could be a sign-on reward, excursion time, or even broad pay all through your time at the organization. The main offer an organization gives you, more often than not, will be not their best and last offer. This is your chance to state that you need more or you need a greater amount of something - remain quiet, and set a precedent.9. On the off chance that You Need Help, Find An AttorneyNP: There are a couple of reasons why individuals counsel a lawyer to help with the exchange procedure. To begin with, arranging is difficult, and toward the day's end, a few people are simply extremely awkward doing as such. In case you're one of those individuals and have the assets, it truly is such a great amount of simpler to host a fair-minded gathering haggling for you.Second, as a matter of fact, I have a ton of data about what others in their fields are making. That sort of data is extremely important in light of the fact that it enables the individual to check whether their compensation is in accordance with the market or in the event that they're truly being come up short on. In the two cases, I'm totally underground. I'll work out the entire exchange system and the counter-offer to the business p roposition, and their boss never at any point realizes that they at any point recruited a lawyer. It's practically similar to simply having an advice and mentor to assist you with organizing it.10. Eventually, It Might Be Uncomfortable, But Just AskNP: I figure it might likewise assist everybody with knowing that men are inquiring. The men are requesting raises, and they're getting them - there's no purpose behind ladies not to ask as well. Toward the day's end, in the event that you need to excel, you need to put yourself out there - the best way to get what you need is to inquire. Aki Merced

Ep 28 - When to Use Transgender Employees Names at Work - Workology
Ep 28 - When to Use Transgender Employees Names at Work - Workology Welcome to the new Workology Go Podcast. In just under five minutes, we get you the HR and workplace news you need before you start your day. Get ready, get set and go with the Workology Go Podcast. Here are todayâs HR and workplace news headlines from Workology Go Podcast. Iâm Jessica Miller-Merrell. The Workology Go Podcast is sponsored by HSA Bank. Ep 28 When to Use Transgender Employees Names at Work As HR leaders it is our responsibility to make our workplaces inclusive, diverse, and as safe as possible for all employees. This means creating a workplace culture and experience that allows for all employees to feel respected and comfortable in their environments. I believe that includes all members of the LGBTQ communities. Recently I came across a story from Mastercard where customers who are transgendered will be allowed to have a credit card with their chosen names. Personally, I think this is fantastic, but I wondered about employers and what this means for our workplaces. Not sure where Iâm going with this? You will in a few. How many employees are transgender? Well, this is not a question that has been researched or polled very heavily for a lot of reasons and I think that people havenât been forthcoming because of the amount of stigma and people who feel unsafe from others when openly sharing if they are transgendered. Washington Post published results from a report of high school students earlier this year with 2% of them identifying as transgender. I think itâs safe to assume that these numbers likely mirror or are similar to our workforce populations. If Mastercard is allowing for transgender customers to add their chosen names, is this something we are doing in our workplaces and what about employee benefits? Todayâs featured article comes from Ad Age and is titled, âMastercard Will Allow Transgender Customers to Use Their Chosen Names on Credit and Debit Cards.â SHRM published a resource article earlier this year titled, âGender Identity: How Should an Employer Handle a Transgender Employeeâs Request for a Name Change?â Iâll link to the article which I believe is available to SHRM members only, but Iâll read you the authorâs recommendations on how and if we should handle name change requests from transgender employees. The author isnât listed on this piece as it is part of their âToolkitsâ section of the website, but I quote, Employers should handle a name change request from a transgender employee the same way they handle any employees name change request. Anyone can legally change his or her name (assuming it is not for fraudulent reasons), choose to go by a nickname or use an English name if his or her name is difficult to pronounce. However, there are compliance and practical considerations that dictate how employers should handle such situations. The Internal Revenue Service requires the name on an employees W-2 form to match the name on his or her Social Security card. These records can be changed when the employee has completed a legal name change. Until then, a note referencing the more commonly used name can be placed with payroll records for internal purposes. While we, as employers might not be able to change an employerâs legal name on their benefits documentation and employee paperwork, we can make policy and practice for allowing for employees to change their names for use on things like company email, employee directories, and recognition walls and intranet pages. Mastercard is leading the way and setting the example here, and I believe is something we, as organizational culture and inclusion champions, should follow suit. These might seem as small changes, but to the individual, they are big gestures to helping all our employees feel welcome at our workplaces especially when you consider that nearly 30% of adolescents who identify are transgender have attempted suicide. This small gesture is not just about inclusion and respect but also about supporting mental health and wellness too. What is Workology Go Podcast? And thatâs this episode of the Workology Go Podcast. 3 Reasons for Managers to Study How to be More Mindful (June 2020)
3 Reasons for Managers to Study How to be More Mindful (June 2020) 3 Reasons for Managers to Study How to be More Mindful in 2020 Image Source: Pixabay / Photography: Jerzy GoreckiThe subject of mindfulness and how to be more mindful was very much on the radar during 2016. Despite some cynics regarding it as somewhat of a new, novelty fad, mindful thinking as a conscious technique has been around since âAdam was a boyâ.âThe first task of management has nothing to do with leading others; step one poses the challenge of knowing and managing oneself.âHowever, despite its venerability, mindful thinking is certainly not obscure, obsolete, or an outdated anachronism.Mindful thinking and mindfulness are far from obsolete, and even further from a fad, as should be clear from our introductory quote, by author, psychologist and science journalist Daniel Goleman. In fact, research shows that there is a trove of compellingly positive and persuasive empirical evidence that managers should study to appreciate why learning how to be more mindful is important for their businesses.Mindfulness has two meanings. O ne is the quality or state of being conscious or aware of something, and the second is more profound and inwardâ"âa mental state achieved by focusing oneâs awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting oneâs feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic techniqueâ.In the study of how to be more mindful, we start with definitions: mindfulness and mindful thinking improves three main qualities of attention in an individual: stability, control and efficiency.Mindfulness boosts cognitive resources and breadth of attention, to help people juggle many events at once. It also increases an individualâs capacity to remain present, and reduces the mindâs futile wandering. The latter accounts for almost half of the waking hours of the average person every day, so just think what you could manage in terms of focused efficiency and quality output if this time could be put to constructive use. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || [] ).push({}); Managersâ New Year Resolution Explore How to Be More MindfulQuite apart from all of the individual benefits of learning how to be more mindful, there is an even more compelling and urgent reason for managers to consciously adopt mindfulness in their conduct in the workplace. There are three broad compelling reasons for managers, business owners and other leaders to adopt a more mindful approach to their leadership style. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); 1. The Ripple Effect of PositivityAlthough mindfulness is an individual activity, there is a vast amount of evidence to suggest that it reaches far beyond the individual and extends to group relations and interpersonal behaviour, which has obvious implications for the workplace. If youâve studied how to be more mindful, you will know that mindful thinking instills a greater capacity within the individual for empathy and compassion. These qualities are often neglected by management amid the hubbub of day-to-day business activities, despite the huge body of evidence on how great leaders have consistently used these qualities in order to have a positive effect in the workplace when managing teams.Donât continue to ignore all the evidence in favour of mindfulness and emotional intelligence. The secret to transformation is within, not without. When unlocked and applied in your daily life, the results are positive and infectious. The US pacifist and labor and civil rights leader, AJ Muste, provides at least one pertinent illustration of the power of self-awareness and mindfulness over external solutions, Muste, whose integrity won him a degree of respect thatâs unusual for a voice of protest, once wrote: âThere is no way to peace. Peace is the way.â2. The Realities of Employee Perceptions of LeadersAccording to Daniel Goleman, when it comes to employeesâ contentment in their work environment itâs often the leader that really counts. And indeed, from the audiobo ok Mindfulness @ Work, a conversation between Goleman and Jon Kabat-Zinn on leading with emotional intelligence, Goleman posits that more than two-thirdsâ"between 50 percent and 70 percentâ"of employees perceive that their organisationâs climate is âattributable to the actions and behaviours of their leaderâ.Image Source: AmazonThis has clear implications, for immediate short-term professional efficiency and the health and effectiveness of relations between personnel, but also for bigger picture questions relating to the organisationâs human resources strategy.Goleman writes. âA leader creates the environment that determines peopleâs moods at the office, and their mood, in turn, affects their productivity and level of engagement.â (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); 3. Mindfulness Works, and Research Confirms ItStudies undertaken by researchers at the Lee Kong Chian School of Business in Singapore have explored the effect of supervisorsâ mindful thinking traits on various aspects of employee wellbeing and performance.Leading Mindfully: Two Studies on the Influence of Supervisor Trait Mindfulness on Employee Well-Being and Performance, involved 96 supervisors and subordinates from a variety of industries. The researchers measured the level of mindful thinking and mindfulness in supervisors, in addition to their employeesâ work-life balance, levels of emotional exhaustion and overall job performance.Their results confirmed the researchersâ hypothesis that the more mindful the leader, the lower the employeeâs emotional exhaustion. More mindful leadership was also associated with better work-life balance for the employee, and better overall job performance ratings of the employee. The implications are clear: mindfulness, and learning how to be more mindful, is a win-win for managers, employees and the organisationâs bottom line.If you heed no other reason for being a more mindful manager in 2020, at least give the fin dings of this study and other research some serious attention for the year ahead, and undertake some research on how to be more mindful in business.

Interview Lessons from the World of Podcasting
Interview Lessons from the World of Podcasting Iâm multi-tasking. Not something Iâm particularly good at, but listening to Marc Maronâs podcast with President Obama Iâm reminded how interviewing techniques, questions and the process employers have used for hiring over decades is broken. Employers know it. Job-seekers feel it. Stats confirm it. Maron starts the podcast rambling about how nervous he is, âIâm panicking all morning,â his attempt to prepare questions, then the President walks into the garage and he and Maron just start having a conversation. Itâs about eight minutes in and Maron says, ââ¦wow we just jumped into it.â Exactly. A real conversation. Ditch the fire response interview. Go for the conversation. Every college student and graduate who has worked with me knows I think the fire response style of interviewing generates lazy questions that yield canned answers. Maron, and I give props to the President as well for the style and direction of the interview, he just said, ââ¦we just dove in, I went with it.â Wow, theyâre covering everything and more you would want in a job interview. Hereâs what Iâm hearing: Transitioning from high school to college Guns Racism Healthcare Basketball Ageing Family His children (Malia is driving!) His father Michelleâs family Religion Comedy Washington politics A Hawaii-induced mindset Post-9/11 policies Bin Laden Basketball Oh did I say basketball? Thatâs a lot of ground in an hour. Not what are your strengths, weaknesses, where do you want to be in five years questions. Breaking for a rant. While listening to the podcast and taping on the keys, Iâm googling âinterview process brokenâ. Im not including the person name or the company, because, well, this infuriates me. traditional interviews dont allow you to know the real person youre hiring. âI ask questions like âwhat would other people say about you,ââ she says. She also doesnât just ask the old âwhere do you want to be in five years,â but instead asks where they want to be in 10 or 20. It makes them off guard and you get some really interesting information from them.â Really! First, the idea that you want to catch someone off guard in an interview is hostile, mean, pointless. Where you want to be in 10, 20 years is the same old tired question. The world can spin off its axis; that about screws that plan. There are so many other ways to find out in an interview what others think about the candidate. Nothing in this personâs interview style suggests they will get to know the real person. I coach job candidates to go in for the conversation. Get the interviewer off their script so they can really get to know you and the value you offer the company. Thatâs how you demonstrate fit. You have to start the dialogue. Itâs tough when youâre not experienced at interviewing but it can be done. The real art Maron and the President display in the podcast is listening. A good interview, and I think this podcast counts as one ([another google while listening and writing,] downloaded 735,063 times in the first 24 hours of availability, and more than 900,000 times in the first 36 hours,) requires listening. Itâs Improv. Interviewing is performance created at the moment it is performed. Itâs a dialogue, itâs collaborative and demands listening to each other. Im listening and I get that Maron had an idea of what he wanted to cover (notice I did not say ask) in the podcast and the President, with his experience, knows how this stuff goes and flows. Interviewers also know what they want to cover and learn from job candidates and job candidates know what interviewers want to hear. Except, interviewers and interviewees are so intent on getting the boxes checked off that they half-listen and/or listen to what is familiar. That is no way to learn anything about anyone. High-five at the end. Iâm coming to the end of the podcast and I just heard one of the best things about it. Maron and the President gave each other a high-five. Yep, they just complimented each other on how well the interview went. That would be an interesting way to end an interview instead of the obligatory thank you and what are the next steps. (Yes, you still do need to do that.) Try this in your next interview. Answer the âtell me about yourselfâ question (you know it is the first question you will be asked) but end by asking a question of the interviewer to get the dialogue started. Try, ââ¦and how did you start your career or how would you describe the ideal candidate for this position. If they wonât play, try it again by saying something like, âI know you have a lot of questions for me, may I ask you something first?â Then ask ad open-ended, thought-starter question to get things going: âWhat do you think makes people successful in this job/at this company?â Keep the dialogue going by asking questions throughout the interview. I advise job-seekers to never let the interview end with the interviewer saying, âWhat questions do you have?â Because thereâs only five minutes left, thatâs a throwaway question. The interviewer does not intend to answer your questions in a way that you will learn anything. If the interview went well, say so, âI learned a lot from you today about this job and company. Thank you for a great conversation.â Let me know how your next interview goes when you took it from checking boxes to a conversation. Thanks Marc Maron and President Obama for an interesting conversation and a great lesson in interviewing.
